The first few songs that come to mind are from my fav, Reba McEntire.
1. "She Thinks His Name was John" on her Read My Mind CD about a girl dying after contracting HIV from a one night stand.
2. "Bobby" about a father helping his sick wife to die and the son forgiving him at the end (euthanasia) It is on her "For My Broken Heart" CD
3. "If I Had Only Known" about the sudden death of a loved one and all the things she wishes she could've said and done if she'd known they were leaving soon. It was written and dedicated to her band she lost in tragic plane crash. This might be right up your alley. Not to hard core, but very profound. It is also on "For My Broken Heart"
4. "What Do You Say" from her #1's CD. It's hard to describe but it's about loosing a loved one and how there really are no words for that situation. It just has to happen at that moment. It is my personal favorite.

All are GREAT songs and you should check 'em out.

"Death Don't Have No Mercy in this Land." Either the Rev. Gary Davis version or acoustic Hot Tuna version will do...

The Blues heritage is full of songs which deal with struggle, death, loneliness and misery. The value is that Blues also deals with strength and the will to endure.

State Radio's "Mr. Larkin" ....not the best song musically..but the lyrics are so sweet..about an old man that works in the kitchen of an old folk's home so that he can support his wife that has to stay there cuz she's dying and losing her mind.
