I have a 50 gal salt water tank. about 8 fish and 50 tank cleaner (snails, hermit crab). maybe adding coral later. one store told me rena is the best, another tells me EHEIM is better, and another tells me magnum is the best. Which is the best? which brand would be the best.

Eheim is the best of these filters, with top notch quality, perfect silence, and easy use. The Rena is an excellent filter that is good bang for the buck, quiet, and decent quality. Fluvals are the cheapest I've used and while not bad in their own right, fairly cheaply made. Despite this I've found all of them are equally effective for the most important aspect - the filtration. No experience with the Magnum though.

I'm IN LOVE with both my Magnum and my Ehiem. However, for my saltwater tank, its Eheim only. Nothing but Magnum for my goldies.

Rena - bah!

Don't really like Hagan for canisters.

If you have a good set up, good sump, protein skimmer etc, you can get away with no traditional filter on an salt tank.

They're all good. Jebo is another up and comer that is a really good system. Still, my heart belongs to Eheim. They seem to be the most reliable.
