ripple is the ineffeciency of rectifier in converting AC to DC (i.e. some AC is in the DC output)

Mathematically there is no overall effect, since the sinusoidal components average to 0. Physically, there will be pulsing in the output proportional to the amplitude of the AC component.

Long, long ago in a chemistry class the instructor held forth on the benefit of introducing ripple into electrolysis and electroplating to break up chemical bonds formed with the anodes and cathodes.
