what can i use other than charcoal paper?

i need something that is very similar in texture and i need something with a mid-value (toned).

Hmmm...shoot just about any paper... you can tone it yourself with charcoal, you can also sand your paper with fine sand paper on some of your smoother papers so it will have a bit more tooth.
