We need sodium and chloride (NaCl, or sodium chloride is the most common form of salt) for many things in our body. for one thing, we use sodium in our nerves to fire "action potentials", to communicate with other parts of our bodies. Most things in the body have to have relatively even positive and negative charges; since sodium is positive, we need chloride (which is negative) to keep things even. We keep these ions (charged particles) in relatively high concentration in the extracellular fluid, so there is less osmotic movement of water.
