Vietnam.
It was an unpopular war that had a massive outpouring of discontent about it. Many young people stood up and protested the war, and the way it was being faught. Vietnam was never a war truely, it was never moved higher then a Police Action. The President isn't allowed to declare war. Only the Congress can.
Iraq. Iraq is another non war. An unpopular President is once again sending troops to an unpopular war. Right now the majority of people are against the Iraq War. The biggest diffrence between Iraq and Vietnam, is that the people support the troops now, where as in Vietnam they didn't. The issue is, that if the Iraq war goes on, will this change?
A couple of the things now that happen that didn't then, are - More war coverage. Reporters in Iraq have more freedom then the reporters in Vietnam.
I think the biggest diffrence between Vietnam and Iraq, are that the people know that violence against the returning troops is not the answer. Most people learned a lesson from the actions of some people in the Vietnam time. Now people are voting not spitting.

Clearly, both wars illustrate what happens when you fail to take account the values, culture and morals of the people you decide to "save." Both wars are Orwellian in that they don't really serve any purpose other than to destroy fruits of the economy that could be given to the workers. Iraq is more frightening in that we need the oil we claim we are not fighting for. So, it's going to be harder to cut & run in Iraq. On the other hand if we keep spending $10 billion dollars per month our country will be destroyed from within. In Vietnam casualties were much higher; however, there was more reporting about the war. Also, since there was a draft there was a strong protest movement. Nobody cares about Iraq or would even sign a petition let a lone march down the street. In Iraq our troups are "volunteers' and like McCain says they can fight and die for another 100 years and nobody will care much about it. Yet, the troops pay a terrible price. In part beuasse of better medical technology, troops suffer an exteremely high rate of head injuries from IEDs. The lesson of both wars are the Powell Doctrine: Don't go to war unless you are prepared to put everything into winning becuase winning is that important which obviously it's not in Iraq. Yes. There are many sad similarities between the two wars. ********************************** In reading the comments above the ignorance displayed is shameful. Those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it.

Both Wars was/is built on lies from the ones in the Whitehouse. Bush & Johnson. We will have a generation of young men and women to come back from Iraq that will make Vietnam look like a picnic. I lost love ones in Vietnam and my brother served as a Machine-gunnist aboard a helitcoper and he is still suffering! O' he received the purple heart but the care he received form the Veterans hospital I would not send my dogs too.

Its very much the same. They even use the same talking points. "Fires we don't put out will bigger burn" was said about Vietnam. "If we don't fight them there, we will fight them here." regarding Iraq. We obviously learned nothing from Vietnam. The communists took over the country after we left, and communism did not spread. Vietnam is now on friendly terms with the US. We can't win a war against an ideology. We can only contain these people and work to improve security in our country.

Vietnam was much more damaging in soldier deaths than Iraq will ever be, in Iraq the US bombs the heck out of an area before commanding soldiers in,
once the soldiers are in is just a matter of picking up the pieces and holding off any new insurgents
someone tell that guy phil to get a dictionary and learn to spell

One is in Iraq and the other was in Vietnam. In both wars, the USA is on the losing end.

you can not compare them! They are different war i hear a lot people trying to compare them all the time. I have been there and sever there in Iraq. I believe there are things simliar like we are losing lots of fellow men and women of the armed forces. Lots of after effects on some soliders nightmares and other stuff. They are two diffent types of peoples. Yes i do support us there! I do believe we are doing the right thang. Now some of our tactics are not right. Just like in Vietnam the most important thang to remember is that alot of people died so you can sleep with both eyes closed and not have to worry about waking up with a blade to your throat.

Comparison----both wars were started by REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTS for reasons OTHER then what they SAID we were fighting for----Iraq--weapons of Mass Distruction---
Viet Nam... the spread of Communism (which never did SPREAD--it actually fell apart in almost ALL countries but a few)...Bush sent troops to Iraq and Eisenhower was the first president to send POLITICAL and MILITARY "advisors" into VietNam..."advisors with rifles". BOTH wars split this country--1/2 thinking the wars should end, half thinkiing they shouldn't. and both were VERY COSTLY---it's kind of like paying for a baby grand piano and NEVER GETTING THE PIANO.

There's more differences than similarities, but the one thing that is the same is our troops have been there too long and the war costs too much. China, by the way is financing this war and putting the average american citizen in debt $90,000 from it--it looks like the big winner in both wars, ironically might be China. That's something to think on.

Both were entered into with no clearly defined exit strategy. Iraq is just the current day version of Viet Nam. Both of which History will say were debacles for the United States
