Find a 250 of some description (because you can have them height adjusted to suit), yes they are light but give you just enough power so you don't kill yourself on the 1st ride.
but it depends on where you live... VISIT your local licensing/registration office because they will be able to tell you what you can & cannot ride, what needs to be done to obtain the license, when & where you can ride, how fast etc.
(or you could call them or try the online area for your licnesing/registration)
Also go to the local bike shop & try the bikes in question (you will soon find what feels right & what doesn't) and ASK the salespeople all the questions your are asking here, because they will be able to show you & give the added info (then you can decide if a brand spankin new one is what you want or something 2nd hand that you can find online etc. Finally go for a drive to the local bike hangout on a Saturday or Sunday, and talk to all the motorcyclists about their rides; they will proudly show off their wares & tell you the pro's & con's as well as give you tips on do's & don'ts
Buy the right Gear to Keep you safe (your local bike shopshould have helmets, Jackets, boots, gloves, bags, jrider jeans(/riders pants) plus all the little stickers & add ons you could imagine not to mention all the differnet runs that will be happening)
Do all the course that are available for riding safe depending on where you live will depend on the name of those course
but most importantly "Stay Upright,Stay Safe & Have Fun"

A Harley 800 series?

At 135 lb. and 5'9", I'm on a FXD35 Superglide.
You need to keep looking. You'll find it.

Too big is what you decide is too big.

Your wt has nothing to do with picking a bike. What matters is can ya put down both feet flat on the ground while sitting still on it!This is so that when ya stop either ft. can be placed down to steady the bike while stopping. Ya don't want a bike that is too tall as this can be a real danger when stopping. Also keep in mind that some bikes can be lowered to with different springs and front forks. Some don't offer the equipment ya need to lower them

harley's are said to be more comfy to ride, you sit more upright...and if im not mistaken, the honda you speak of is a sports bike....those you lean forward on top of the gas tank..... It's not really about how much you weigh, if you can keep the balance of the bike when not moving then you're good....try them out at a dealer...sit on them...kick up the kick stand and see which feels better under you...take one for a test ride and see which one you're more comfy riding...most dealerships will let you test ride if you have your license. with bikes, the biggest issue is height...you hear all the time about tall guys needing to get their handle bars adjusted...but for the most part...it's all about personal preference...what are you comfy on? what do you plan on doing with the bike? (ride, race, tour?) how much do you plan on spending??? good luck

You need to take a Motorcycle Safety course before you hurt yourself.

A Sportster is very difficult to handle.

And a Honda 600. What model?

If you take an MSF course, they will help answer your questions.

this will be a better choice.
Harley sportster 883 and a Honda shadow 750. both are good bikes. try them both and buy what you like better. Honda will last you for ever though. but hey who keeps them for ever?
