First try:
Start>My Computer>right-click C drive>Tools>Click Error-checking. Check both options. It'll ask you to reboot. Then it will check for disk errors and try to recover anything lost files or bad sectors.
It runs in 3-5 parts, takes a while.
If that doesn't work, try System Restore to a time when it worked ok. It won't hurt anything. You can always undue Last Restoration if you need to.
If that doesn't work, reboot, keep hitting F8 (at least on my computer) until a list crops up. Choose Last Know Good Configuration.
If none of these work, you probably need to check your memory stick(s).

Is it getting hot? Computers freeze up when they get hot, or if one of the memory sticks are jarred loose. Go to the Last Known Good Configuration is a cool thing, it just won't load if this doesn't work, and as other ppl have stated, it might be a virius thing, but I'm almost betting, not.
