Sand is a great substrate, but it can clog your filters impeller. So when you clean your tank, make sure you shut off your filter. And if you have feisty puffers, they may kick up the sand too.

Personally I have always preferred gravel just because sand is harder to clean. But sand would look great in a puffer tank. Since it won't matter to puffers, I guess it's just a matter of personal taste.

Sand looks so nice, too. Try to get pool filter sand at the local Home Depot...pretty decent price. A little more expensive than play sand but not as fine so doesn't get sucked up into the filter as easily and still is a lot cheaper than buying it a fish store.

I read that puffers like sand in their tank. Try putting a inch or two of sand in there.

Try a one inch layer of gravel under the sand and give it a sloping landscape look.

sand is better. we had gravel, and got ick like 3 times, then switched to sand and since then (2 yrs) havent had any sick fish. also, you dont have to vaccum sand.

It will be fine, puffers won't care.
