How can you get down to the truth of a story with two sides (ie: a dispute between two people) when both side are either opposing, or almost completely different?

Try to find independent witnesses. If there are none, which version makes more sense? Who has the bigger incentive to lie? Obviously, knowing which person is generally the more truthful is helpful.
