Southern Iraq. Ur a city of the Chaldean's was the home of Abram who was renamed Abraham (It means "Father of Nations" or something like that.) The Name "Hebrew" means "herdsmen" or "Shepard" and as a language it was spoken by herdsmen. This is why the Egyptians thought the Jews were abominable, because of their association with bulls-cattle which was an unclean animal according to Egyptian religious custom of the day.(See: The Book of Genesis or Moses I) I have read that it is connected Eber a descendant of Shem-(We get the word: "Semitic" from this guy.) the son of Noah but this is speculative and the name dose have the meaning of "Herdsman" so I'll stick with the known fact over the speculation yet I think it wise to rule out nothing. Abram got saved at about 70 years old and God told him to follow him to "A land that I shall give you" and Abram followed God (Without knowing where he was going by the way.) around the "Fertile Crescent" all the way to the land of Canaan (Named after the son of Ham-another son of Noah from which we get the word "Hamitic". (As in African-languages.) In Canaan Abraham begets several sons Ishmael and Isaac namely. Ishmael along with the other sons of Abraham become the Arabs, Ishmaelite, midianites ect. Isaac Has two sons Esau and Jacob. Esau's descendents become the nation of Edom. And Jacob's descendents become (After his name change to Israel) the Israelites of whom one tribe, Judah is where we get the word: "Jews". Anyway, Jacob and his 12 sons and one daughter and all the grandchildren. (70+ in all.) Go down to Egypt during a famine and because Joseph one of Israel’s sons has become a great ruler their. Anyway after a few generations (400) years the Israelites have about 2-3 Million people and have become slaves. Moses leads the out of Egypt and Joshua leads them in the conquest of the land of Canaan and the rest is history. For a complete account read the Book of Genesis (The 1st book in the Bible.) The above is the only existing account which is backed by a primary source document. Any other of the more modern accounts are merely the fantasies of Ph.D. candidates seeking an original dissertation topic on a pretty much closed epoch of history. Hope this was of some help. I would have quoted sources but its all off the top of my head nevertheless, reading Genesis will clear most of it up. 5 points would be appreciated. God Bless.

RE:
Where did the original Hebrews come from?
I know that they fled Egypt, but I'm wondering where they first originated. I heard somewhere that they were nomadic for a while and ended up being captured by the Egyptians, but where did they originate (and when)?

Hebrews (or Heberites, Eberites, Hebreians; Hebrew: עברים or עבריים, Standard ʿIvrim, ʿIvriyyim Tiberian ʿIḇrîm, ʿIḇriyyîm; meaning "descendants of biblical Patriarch Eber"), were people who lived in Canaan, an area encompassing Israel, both banks of the Jordan River (The West Bank and Jordan), Sinai, Lebanon, and the coastal portions of Syria.
