It sometimes when I walk into the laundry room after it has finished spinning, I can smell something like burnt rubber. It's warm down near the bottom on the front (by my feet) also.
At first I thought it was unbalanced but now I'm wondering if it needs a belt. I also noticed the tub moves around quite easily from side to side/front to back - more than what it should (compared to the washers in the store). Btw - it's a stinkin' GE Profile.

Oh - and by the way how would I go about doing this if indeed I do need a belt? Also, I assume I just call Home Depot or Sears (?)and ask them if they have a GE profile washer belt....?

Hi In the 5 plus years ive been a tech I have only replaced one belt for a washer, that was due to oil getting on it. You might have a motor problem or the transmisson is failing. Good luck.

There is a part called a snubber you should look at before you start worrying about the belt.

It works to keep the tub from easily shaking back and forth when the washer is overloaded and somewhat unbalanced. With the tub empty try sliding it back and forth. If that is too easy the snubber is worn down. Pickup the washer's top (usually a couple of front catches hold it down). Look in the top for heavy rubber parts attached to the tub at the top and see if they seems to be sliding easily. If so they need to be replaced. That is easy to do since they are in an easy to reach location In the meantime try running the machine with smaller loads.

If the snubbers are OK and the problem is not helped by the smaller loads then it is belt-worry time.

Them GE's spin fast. If unit is doing it's job leave it alone. Don't worry when the tranny craps out the belt will brake. Tub is suspended and will move around if pushed on. Get ready to get another washer within 2-3 months. You don't need that kinda headache. Try www.gesucks.com
