As a matter of fact, I did. It was about 1963 - I was about 13 years old. A tornado came right at our house, it tore a horse farm to splinters about 300 yards in front of our house. Then it came right toward our house. I was stuck outside all this time because the pressure difference wouldn't let me open the door. My brother was looking out of the back picture window - it was pure white from the water, couldn't see a thing. Then the rear window blew in, knocked my brother down - instantly gave him 2 HUGE black eyes. When the window blew in, I was able to open the door. I was covered in broken glass - there was a foot of water on the floor - my mom was trying to get my sister in the basement. I grabbed my brother and got into the basement just when the tornado went over our head. It sort of lifted up maybe 30 feet just as it passed over our house, but came back down when it got to the back yard, All the houses behind us for about a half a mile had their roofs ripped off. I guess we were lucky LOL!!

Most people do. Those who don't are usually crushed under falling debris or pummeled to death by flying debris.

However, don't let the newspaper stories spook you. The f4 and f5 tornados are the rare tornados and they have to hit an inhabited area to cause fatalities.

i became into out tenting, asleep on the time. It looked like an extremely severe thunderstorm, with particularly useful winds. the fringe of the tent began to develop up (it became into no longer staked all the way down to the floor, in simple terms held up with fiberglass poles.) I a million/2-woke, questioning the different adult males have been taking part in a comedian tale on me. I stated some thing like "howdy, that's not humorous, positioned the tent down." a couple of minutes later, after the hurricane surpassed and that i awakened totally, state park rangers got here to work out if we've been all ok. It undergone below 440 yards from us. i ought to have wound up in oz.!
