Why do new bands pop up everyday? why do kids still dissent against authority? People still feel lost in this world. I dont think its up to anyone to take away something that changes your life. Punk lived and according to crass died. but what about UK 82 (GBH, The Exploited, etc.) or the 80-86 American hardcore movement (not the new dumb emo one) or the modern punks of today. Whos to say that punk is dead? You can kill something that someone feels. Whats your opinion?

New bands pop up everyday because let's be honest, punk isn't exactly the most demanding genre to play. At a time in the lives of many young people, the idea of starting a band seems like a good idea. If you have a garage, you have a couple of friends, you have some instruments from a pawn shop, and you have two fingers for power chords, you start a punk band. Less skill is required than for say, prog rock.

Kids still dissent against authority because they are kids. Kids dissented in my time, my mother's time, and even my grandmother's time. It's part of being a kid. And even straight-edgers didn't want to be goody-goodies, so they turned their position into a punk pose.

I think the idea behind the Crass statement is that punk is no longer fresh. If that is the case, then I agree with them. Punk has been around for several DECADES now. Punk has long been part of the mainstream, no matter how many new punks like to insist it is still waaaay underground. Like I said, people still go to punk for the same reasons they did in the seventies, but they are playing the same music for the same reasons as thousands upon thousands of others. And all of them trying to outdo the rest as the most non-comformist, angry, underground, sourpuss on the planet. But it's all been done.

You can't kill something that someone feels, but you also can't expect people to be moved by something that isn't as revolutionary as it was long ago. Now, it is all just part of the broader youth culture bought and sold in the marketplace. What do punks wear nowadays? Skate shoes? How much do those cost? How about the patches of all those non-mainstream bands? Stickers to go on the Les Paul or LP-style guitars? Studded leather cuffs? Baggy jeans?

If you like punk, then play it and listen to it and be happy. That's all that matters.

Some people are more vocal and complainers. Some people also blame an entire society or an entire generation for their own angst.

If you don't like the world, change your perception of it.
