Murray (below) - you do realise that the major effect of the Portuguese incursion into the Indian Ocean was to disrupt thriving existing trade patterns? You are a victim of Eurocentric teaching.

Timbuktu is a good example of an Arabic speaking western African nation. The Moors who conquered Spain were also mostly west Africans Arabic speakers as well.

I'd say it had more to due with the sword than with traders though, since "midieval" Africa covers the time of violent expansion.

I do not think they got that far, most of West Africa was discovered by the Portuguese followed by the French and English and latterly the German.
So any main land of West Africa speaks a lot of French, Portuguese and English.
