OH sweetie there are so many things to do, but some of it is unstoppable really.

Anti-virus software and a filter would be a good start. Also download ad-aware at www.download.com- I suggest running it once a week. Also, Spybot or Search and Destroy are good.

Then, as a general rule- do not participate in forwards or chain mail- unless you know that it is something personal-like a picture from last weekend or what not do not open files and attachments on emails- even if they are from friends and especially if they are forwards or chain mail.

Another thing to do- is set up an email that is just for "junk" in that when you have to give your email address out for a contest or whatnot that that email will not go to your regular account. As another general rule- whenever you give your email address out on the internet it is normally sold or used by the website's partners resulting in spam.

Additionally, Yahoo and Hotmail both have spam filters and junk mail boxes on them- you can customize what is sent there- some email servers allow you to block emails from sertain @whatever.com addresses OR automatically delete emails that contain certain words lick dick, porn, xxx, viagera, etc or whatever word you chose

Lastly, and be careful with this, sometimes you can unsubscribe from mailings that you have inadvertently gotten on, however, sometimes when you do this you just confirm that it is a valid working email address- and never reply directly to a spammer as this lets them know it is a valid email address b/c sometimes they just go through random email account names

I hope that that all helps...

Spam is generated from 2 sources. You may have given your email address to an untrustworthy person, or someone who's computer had an email virus, and in either case the address is circulating in the spam lists, or you have a simple address that can be hit by a random generator. Steps to help: 1 NEVER open or reply to spam. That just flags the address as valid 2 Does your ISP offer a spam filter? that can be quite good, but there is a risk that legitimate mail may be lost. 3 If you switch to something like Mozilla Thunderbird as your email program there is the option to use a junk filter which can learn your preferences and allow mail from sources in your contact list. 4 Use Mailwasher from Firetrust.com as a front end to delete unwanted mails without downloading them(basic free, full package costs £). 5 if all else fails change your email address to something less obvious and be careful who you give the new one to. There is no file on your computer that is responsible for this, unless you have a virus &c. infection

Use the mail filters. The Advanced filters automatically deletes/moves junk messages that contain certain words and phrases. Usually spam mail is not addressed directly to your email address, so a mail rule to create: IF the mail is NOT addressed to xxxxxx@hotmail.com, THEN delete these messages.

To create a new mail rule, click on 'Tools', then 'Message Rules' in Outlook.

Spam can (and will) get through any filter. The best option is to use an email service provider that allows you to whitelist email addresses. This means that you will only get emails from people and places you know. The first one that comes to mind is Gmail. I don't know whether or not Yahoo! does it.

Ho-ly ****, man. DON'T click on the damn unsubscribe links! Most of the time, they do absolutely nothing; if the goal of the e-mail is to lure you into contracting a virus via a URL, the link'll probably take you to the infected page. If they're just advertising, it'll send you to something that SAYS 'Thanks for unsubscribing' or sumthin, but it won't do ****. Just mark all as spam; you're on Yahoo, aren't you? Those messages and others from that sender will get automatically put in the spam folder.

You can try downloading a filter. Tons are available at places like softpedia, zdnet, cnet, and majorgeeks. We tried one from CA.com. It was called qurb at the time, but has a new name now. Worked pretty good and was a lifetime license. No silly yearly fees.
