They're not technically commercials, it's product placement. Ford just gives (or loans) Freemantle (the company that makes Idol) cars and Freemantle sells them time with-in the show.

Also, I would guess Ford doesn't buy the rights to use them elsewhere, and they wouldn't be able to air anywhere but FOX, since CBS isn't going to run a commerical to promotes a FOX show.

Cause Ford sponsors the show! They let the Idols and staff drive the cars and I think the winner gets a car too!

I wonder that too. After all they cost a lot of money and they are all really good I think. They're better than a lot of the car commercials they play over and over and over till you're sick of hearing them.

They get more coverage on the show anyway than they would during regular commercial breaks

They are just for the show. That's the way that they've done it since the show began.
