AdAware Personal SE from www.lavasoft.com,is very good and can also be found from links on www.download.com. Another good one is SpyBot S&D at www.safer-networking.org. A good firewall for keeping stuff like that out is ZoneAlarm Anti-spy because it works at the operating system level and makes programs wait for you to give them permission to run. If you didn't install a program by that name that is asking permission click deny in the dialogue box and it is not allowed to run. If you are in doubt about an item, then Google the file name to see if it is a legitimate application. If you are suckered into giving permission to malware you can kill that program afterwards. It also can allow a program to run, but deny it the capacity to access the web or change other programs or edit the registry of other files. As a free version. This also can be found at www.download.com. For software I have used in security I've went through the offerings at download.com, singled out the free ones and free trials, and tried various ones and made note of which I thought performed best. You should also combine a search and download of a good anti-virus. www.grisoft.com has a free version of AVG Anti-virus that is pretty effective. Before downloading files check to see the editor and user reviews on the products. There is a lot of less than worthy programs out there, or it might lack features you need, or have operating requirements that you don't want to deal with. Thr top portion of a download page is what the program writer has to say about it. After that are the site-staff coments, and then comments by other PC users like yourself that have already tried the product. That is one of the most helpful sections. An unethical person might post hype about a product to promote it, but if it works poorly, others will post their bad experiences also. Take note if the post seems like it's from someone who knows how to use a PC and the English(or local) language in their comments. If it looks like a post from a kindergarten drop-out, then likely they just don't know how to use the software.

For adware, I suggest Ad-Aware SE; for spyware, Spybot S & D. Get both. They're both free, and they each catch things the other doesn't.
No one program catches everything, no matter what people tell you.

Try getting "Spybot Search And Destroy" and "Adaware". They're both easy to use, but one might pick up things that the other misses.
