The best way to insure you'll buy the correct memory is to go to:
http://support.dell.com
type in your Service Tag # and find out what components your system was shipped with. Get the same spec module to do the upgrade. Dell will sell your the memory but if you have the specs go to:
http://www.tigerdirect.com
They have really good prices on computer stuff.

If you buy from Dell you will pay out the nose. http://newegg.com or http://tigerdirect.com are the best places on the net to get the memory you need. You do have to know what kind of memory you have (ddr, ddr2) and you also need to make sure how much memory you can use, and the number of slots avalible, you might be able to add more chips (if you have empty slots) or you may have to replace the current chip(s) with new ones.

as long because it is an identical kind of reminiscence, like PC133 SDRAM as an occasion, and it has an identical style of actual connector (the DRAM chip modules have little slots on them so as that they'd basically be inserted one way) then specific, pass forward. pass into the BIOS whilst booting and verify the hot quantity of reminiscence. do not difficulty approximately "erasing" the reminiscence, that happens all by applying itself whilst the means is bumped off whilst it gets close down or the reminiscence module is bumped off. make specific to apply ESD (elctro static discharge) risk-free practices (a wrist strap as an occasion) or you need to break the chips without even understanding it.

Go to the crucial site and press the button "Scan my system" click "show all"; this will tell you what RAM can be used in your system and what upgrade options you have.

It will not tell you what speed your RAM is. To determine the RAM speed download Cpu-Z by CPUID , unzip and run cpuz.exe .

In the results, the SPD Tab will list Memory manufacturer, memory module size; Maximum bandwidth; Part number, Serial number, and Manufacturing date.
Maximum bandwidth will list something like PC2-4300 (266 MHZ) . Your memory speed = 4300/8 = 537.5 Hz. or twice what is in parenthesis.

Add more memory to your computer
http://www.microsoft.com/canada/home/internetandsecurity/2.4.38_addmorememorytoyourcomputer.aspx

When you add RAM all your RAM will run at the speed of the slowest RAM installed.

Once you know your memory type and speed you can buy your memory anywhere.
