All of these points are good points, but there is another one that people don't realize. In a lot of places (America is one of them) it is actually illegal to release a book before it's release date. Stores get in a lot of trouble if they get caught releasing any book before it's date. This levels the playing field for the stores. Also, if it gets out it can be copied. Then it is not just the profits that are lost, by those of businesses. If it happens enough stores can't hire as many employees or pay them as much. It hurts all that are involved. It is the same as with movies and music.

Information of the sixth book leaked before it was released worldwide. Several copies were actually accidentally sold in Canada I think it was.

She's just putting out an official word about the seventh book and spoilers because she doesn't want to see that happen again. Especially since it's the last installment and people have been waiting and waiting. Reading a book is supposed to be enjoyable and suspenseful, what's the point if you know the climax and how it all ends beforehand? In all honesty, to a lot of people spoilers ruin the joy of reading any book.

Probably because it's the last book of her AMAZING Septology and she must have put sooo much thought and time into it-- wouldn't you want to go out with a completely unexpected 'bang' too? Like the poster above said, this is and has been her whole career... If someone happens to mention or guess something that is in the last book, then everyone will be like OMG THAT WAS SOOO PREDICTABLE.... Poor JK Rowling! But the book will rock!

I am sure that, to an extent, she doesn't want sales to drop if details are made public too soon. After all, a lot of people have pet theories about what might/ought to happen and some might not buy if their pet theory is shot down.

But I think more importantly, she has invested a great deal in the series and wants people to enjoy every twist, turn and surprise without spoilers.

Since "The Deathly Hallows" is purportedly to be the final installment in the Harry Potter series, I imagine that it will be extremely climactic; I suppose that J. K. Rowling would not wish for the details to be revealed before the release of the book as there must be those in the publishing industry who would have access to them prematurely. For myself -- a devout Harry Potter fan -- I would not personally want to visit those sites; I plan to reserve my copy and want to read it for myself to learn of the amazing finale to Harry's (Ron's and Hermione's) magical adventures.

The books should be called, Harry Potter and the most complicated/intriguing plot in the history of literature. The woman is richer than the queen on her own country, and yet she still cares that her fans don't find out what happens in teh final book so that 8+ years of their emotional investment in Harry wont be ruined by an inconsiderate individuals who never learned how to be patient and anticipate the sweetness of surprise.

Just as she was with all the other books. It is HER work and she chooses (along with her publisher) to have a large world-wide release with the contents being kept secret until that point. Do you think she is different from any other author in that respect? If it gets leaked, why bother to have a publisher put all this money and effort into a big release date? Respect her and wait. Imagine if someone walked up to you and told you that Severus Snape turned out to be completely evil and killed Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Minerva McGonagall in cold blood because he was having a bad day. I would be ticked if someone ruined the book for me, and I would be ticked if someone ruined my work for someone else. JKR may be one of those people who love to surprise other people and just can't stand the thought of her surprise being ruined.

(And for the record I don't think Snape is completely evil. But if he is -- then I'll be surprised!)

Its basically the culmination of her entire career. I'm sure there's several plot twists that no one will see coming. To spoil the surprise for fans who have followed the story for years would be an injustice.
