...ah, yes!! "The Warriors"!!
...it was one of the first 'R' rated movies I went to see, when I was able to go without that wretched 'parental supervision"; I, too, remember the controversy, regarding theatres being dubious about playing the film, for fear of visiting gang members getting too roused up by the film. However, thinking back, when comparing the film to something a little more up-to-date, like the more realistic "Colors" , from 1988, "The Warriors" seems to come off much more like a comic book action/adventure/drama.
In fact, director Walter Hill had originally intended to impose a much more medieval-spirited comic book approach to the look and premise of "The Warriors", even going so far as to transit from scene to scene, via comic-book-style panels.
Paramount originally released the VHS tape, and subsequently the DVD, using the original (and much more exploitive) theatrical print of the film; just last year, Paramount, in working with director Walter Hill, released a special edition director's cut of the film, re-imposing Walter's direct comic book approach to the film (panel transitions, and the lot).
The differences between the two films, make for slightly different cinematic tones and flow.
...a remake of the film is reportedly in the works, to be directed by Tony Scott, with the locale setting switched over, from New York to Los Angeles.

The Warriors was an amazing movie.
It showed some of the excellent ideas of the time period.
But...movies are better in their own ways.
This movie will always be a classic in my book but it will not be able to control my urge to see other movies.

I admit that it a great movie ,but not the greatest You could say that in the early 80's . It seems that you watched it soon so you are amazed by the movie.

not the greatest but definitely one of my favorites. the whole concept of having to fight your way home was really good.
there was a martial arts film made with sort of the same concept but it was no where near as good as this--i only mention it because of the "fight your way home" theme
if you liked The Warriors, you might also look up an older film called Streets of Fire.
