Many of you have failed to read that I'm not asking for refernces on resume...I'm asking for how many I should include WITH my resume, inside my teaching portfolio. ON my resume, I have references available upon request. But I need to know how many to have available......:-\ I went with three.

How many references should you include? Here is the answer from Career Expert Laura DeCarlo, executive director of Career Directors International.
Keep your reference list format to two or three references. "Three is what most companies are looking for," DeCarlo said. Listing more references than that doesn't necessarily give you a leg up, she said, and listing too many names may overwhelm an employer. A format for a reference page of a resume should be clean and simple.
Be selective. In handing over references, DeCamp said, remember you're interviewing the employer as much as they're interviewing you. Collect information from the employer first, so you can target who your references will be, she said.
This advice comes from an interview with career experts entitled "How to Put References in a Resume" by PayScale. You can read the article at http://blogs.payscale.com/content/2007/05/how_to_put_refe.html.
Hope that helps,

Always place 'Available upon request'. You should be using the most substance possible on your resume in the least amount of room. Hiring Managers aren't going to call your references before a first interview, anyways.

You should have at least three:
Your mentor from student teaching
The teacher from your education department who oversaw your student teaching
One other reference from someone not in your family like:
College job Superior
Greek president of your organization
The the teacher who taught most of the classes in your major
Volunteer supervisor
Any other supervisor
Etc.
Then put that further references are available on request.
Never use a person as a reference unless you get their permission first.

None. Employers don't like reading a long resume. Include one line at the end of your resume stating "Personal and professional references available upon request."

Never include them, your resume is out of your hands and into the world where anyone can see it. Your references should have privacy so not have their names and phone numbers spread randomly. Once you give out a resume the person getting it can do what they please with it. I gave mine to manager when applying for a promotion/transfer and weeks later she told me she gave it to another manager. She told me they talked about me and decided I would be better off working for him and he wanted to hire me. I did get a 27.5% pay raise so wasn't angry and liked the man who wanted to hire me. But the point is my resume was available to be shared and references are private until I want to share them.

I've always put "References furnished upon request" at the end of my resume... then if they want references, they can contact me and I'll supply them with the names/numbers.

I wouldn't put the references on the resume, but write references available upon request. I would recommend 3 references.
