I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks. It had to be an internal one and all we saw was the yolk sac. At 9 weeks we had another one and we could see our baby. She looked like a little peanut with tiny arms and legs but it was still cute.

You won't start seeing the baby on the ultrasound until 20 weeks and up. I remember getting my first ultrasound at 4 to 5 months.

I had an ultrasound at 9 weeks with my son and he didn't look much like a baby yet! He looked more like a baby at my 20 week ultrasound (which is the typical time for an ultrasound unless you have medical reasons to need one earlier). I recommend the book A Child is Born (Paperback)
by Lennart Nilsson (Author) if you'd like to see how the baby develops. I enjoyed looking through it throughout my pregnancy. Congratulations!

at 4 weeks an abdominal scan more than likely will not pick up on your baby ask your obstetrician to do a transvaginal ultrasound you should be able to see the yolk sacs if not the yolk sacs and a tiny little peanut i went in at 7 weeks and good see both well with a transvaginal ultrasound and we also heard a vital heartbeat that was 146bpm at the same time so good luck with everything.

My first u/s I was about 6 weeks along. My baby looked like a grain of rice.
When I had a second u/s at 9 weeks, it actually looked kind of like a human, but more like an alien. Big head, but you could make out the body. You could tell where the little butt was, and the legs and you can see the feet and the arms and even the umbilical cord.
So I guess somewhere between 6-9 weeks you can actually make out exactly what it is.
Congratulations on your new addition!

COngrats to you both*~ You'll have to wait till your wife is about 18-20weeks before an ultrasound is booked* It would be worth your while to attend that appt with her as it's something you'll never forget* Seeing your baby for the first time as it's growing in her stomach, moving around, youll hear the heart beat etc*
Congrats*~

You can probably see something that looks like a pea now, but her bladder will have to be FULL or they'll have to do it vaginally. You're not going to see anything interesting like arms and legs until around 15-20 weeks.
