The meaning is the same, but DWI stands for "Driving While Intoxicated", which does infer that you are intoxicated from alcohol, while "under the influence" could be the influence of prescription or over the counter medication. With so many drugs out there, they have to have a way to classify it all as the same danger, hence the more common use of DUI.
Hope that helps.

driving while intoxicated was used in a lot if eastern states when i was younger for when someone was drunk driving.
then they started to change it to driving under the influence so it could cover a wider range of intoxicants, including drugs, as well as, alcohol beverages.
i believe most of the states are using the DUI over the DWI.
hope this helps you

I could swear I heard that Driving While Intoxicated is no longer used, I think for legal reasons. I think it more often stands for: Driving While Impaired.
That way, they don't have to prove you were intoxicated (which may be more subjective) but only that you were impaired.

Driving While IMPAIRED. It means that you can be fined for driving while being on medication that carries a warning about operating vehicles while taking it, too. You can be fined for being IMPAIRED by drugs. It is not just intoxication.
