Yeah, I don't really get the star, either though. It sounds like the star just gives me a reference to the question and answer, not the recognition that I wanted to give the question.

It started as thumbs ratings on questions. But they got complaints about how negative that was and they decided to switch it to the star system instead. Personally I think some questions could use a lot of thumbs down, but I also see how many of these features are abused.

Yes, you used to be able to give questions thumbs down but they removed that feature. I don't know why. If a star is offered, the thumbs down should also be offered!
