I dont know the answer, but damn ,am I glad to see someone else ask this question.
best question I think I have seen on answers.
they told us at one time we had to do 55 to conserve gas
the only problem is having enough troopers to enforce it
the big part of the people have to see a trooper , before they slow down now, highway looks like a Christmas tree when a trooper is on the side

P>S>
there is a bunch of crap here tonight
yes ,you conserve fuel when you drive 55 in the place of 65, you need to do some homework

then for those that dont want to drive 55 because it cramps your style , you can kiss my ***,, get up earlier and do 55,

you want to scream about algore and his light bill,,whats the difference,,,you are wasting energy also

I agree with the guy and the idiots on his tailgate,,say if you dont like it , get on another road

damn idiots in this country piss me off

you get my star bud ,only wish I could give you 2

Where have you been? They tried that and it was a disaster. I don't know what kind of car you are driving but mine gets better mileage, 31.8 mpg at 70 than it does at 55 (27.5) Most new cars have 5 or 6 speed auto transmissions that get great mileage at higher speeds. What we need is a federal law that will make drivers keep to the right lane except when passing. Only on Limited access highways, such as the Interstates. Don't add fuel to the fire with 55 MPH speed limits.

I beleive there have been many attempts in the last few yrs. The regulation you are talking about was brought about by Nixon in the early 70's as a result of the oil embargo of 73. The reason they don't do it now is because it is very un popular with the citizens and so there is no political support. The oil companies do not want you driving 55mph. We would save billions ea yr. They don't want that. Basically, just no political support know matter how you slice it.

Because there are many places that it is painful to go 55 MPH. But the main reason is that congress does not have jurisdiction over roads. In the constitution an expressed power of the state is to build roads. Meaning it is the job of the state to maintain roads and not the national government.

I have a better idea. Why don't they take the taxes off the gas. The government makes more per gallon than anyone else. Maybe we should be investigating Big Government

Supply and demand and nothing to do with the price of gas. The price of gas is controlled by greedy little men in business suits who are determined to screw as much as they possibly can out of consumers. Just like the price of food and housing and everything else that is bought and sold.

Stop moaning and just accept that greed is the driving force behind the socio-economic philosophy called Capitalism that we all hold so dear.

Because there would be a national outrage. Congress has no jurisdiction on the speed limit. It is a state-mandated thing. I, for one, have no desire to give Congress more power than they have already gotten.

Their lack of regulation is a good thing. It gives you the freedom to drive 55, but me the freedom to drive 75. We can both coexist without impinging on the other's rights!!!

Besides, many people prefer the tradeoff of a little extra fuel cost to save time. Plus, the savings in consumption would be minimal.

Bull, Carter tried feeding us that tripe in the 70's. Cars actually run more efficient at 65 or 75. Carter was clueless and let himself be led around by the nose by the liberals. NO MORE

The "green" lobby doesn't pay as well as the fossil fuel lobby. There is so much money made in Texas from the use of gasoline, why reduce the demand?
