Is it possible? Sure. Technology like Javascript, Active X, Flash animation and others allow websites to run programs within the web browser. And, because they are programs, they can install spyware, viruses and other malicious files. For example, in MySpace, some clever hacker included a worm within a music clip which infected tens of thousands of computers. You have to understand, when you allow these extra visual and audio effects, you're giving permission for them to run programs on your computer. Internet Explorer tries to solve the problem by putting websites in to trusted or not trusted website zones. I recommend you only use trusted websites and stay away from sketchy websites.

Yes, it is possible for a malicious site, even one that shares streaming video, to spread spyware and viruses. I've never heard of a virus attached to a streaming video file however.

First you have to trust the website. An Internet trust organization is a company that verifies that a website has a privacy statement (a posted notification of how your personal information is used) and that the website gives you a choice of how they use your information. Websites approved by Internet trust organizations are able to display the privacy certification seals, usually somewhere on their home page or order forms. However, these seals don't guarantee that a website is trustworthy; it just means the website complies with the terms acceptable to the Internet trust organization. Additionally, some unscrupulous websites might display the trust logos fraudulently. If you are not sure whether a trust logo is legitimate, contact the trust organization to see if the website is registered with them.

YES. Although YouTube itself hasn't suffered from a true malware problem, other streaming video sites can have embedded malware. The link below will explain in further detail if needed.

the website might have viruses and spy ware on them and even if the streaming videos might be safe, the website it self can still infect you with these things.

Any website can have viruses and spy ware, and people can write scrips that install them without you knowing, so it doesn't matter if they have streaming videos or not.
