Here - for all the rude people out there, i'll rephrase what i was trying to ask in the first place:

Why is it not good to touch a CRT monitor?

1. i'm not trying to impress my bosses by sending the e-mail to them to inform them so that they could make a quick announcement in our morning meeting to remind people that it's possible the monitors could be damaged by touching them

2. i genuinely don't want the monitors ruined

3. at home i don't touch my monitor, neither does my fiance

4. static electricity from touching the screen could cause damage

5. this was NEVER about tattling

i just don't understand why people have to be so rude here. i ask questions that i genuinely want REAL-life answers to and some of the responses i receive are just mean. it's sad.

and to people that think that i should just not worry about it, it's not your monitor <------------that right there is what's ruining the world. to me that says, "i don't care, it doesn't affect me."

Touching the screen is not likely to damage it at all, crt monitors are very robust, however there is normally a lot of static on the front of them, this can give you a bit of a shock. Also there is a certain amount of radiation from any crt, the further away you keep the better, although briefly touching it is hardly likely to hurt you. (or the monitor)
There are many who answer here who think it is clever to give rude, stupid answers. I don't mind a funny answer when someone obviously has badly phrased a question, but th rudeness, and sometimes destructive answers of people who just have no clue, does annoy me. Just ignore the idiots, anyone who gets too silly you can report abuse, it is handled in confidence, and you do normally get sensible attempts at help from most people.

The reason why you can not find any information about the dangers of touching a monitor is there are no dangers.

The worst you can do is leave fingerprints.

No monitors made in the last 10 years or so produce static on the screens. MPR II certification, which is standard on all monitors, requires that a anti-static conductive coating be on the screen.

People are being rude because not only are you grossly misinformed, you are being belligerent about it too. You have assumed that there is a problem, despite there being no evidence, rather than asking if there actually is a problem or not.

BTW, after 7 years of designing monitors and another 8 as 3rd level support I do know what I am talking about.

I seriously don't know the harm in touching a CRT monitor. I do all the time and nothing happens. The monitor does not break or anything, and no bodily injury is incurred. But it's good to not touch it, no fingerprints to worry about. Of course there may be dust, but you can easily wipe it off with a cloth, and if you want to be on the safe side, you can turn your monitor off and wipe. You can even unplug it to be really safe.

In my opinion, the only way you can damage a monitor is if heavy force is used to strike it or liquid is spilled into the cabinet. I haven't heard of monitors being damaged by just touching them. Either the workplace you work at buys really cheap monitors or they're just really old. If that's not the case, then I don't know. Those are all the scenarios I can think of.
Also, if the monitor is really cheap or if there's a defect in them, maybe that's why they break. TV's are CRT, I touch mine all the time to wipe off dust or dirt. I've had it for 12 years now and it's still going.
Anyway, that's all I can think of. I personally like flat panel displays better than CRT, mainly because there is no glare on matte screens and dust doesn't really build up on matte screens. Glossy, I don't really like. I say they look nicer clean and not turned on.

I'll bet this one's afraid to swallow... Who knows what that could cause!!! LOL

You try to start a crucade to keep people from touching their monitors at work... You'll be funny at first... scapegoat next... looking for a new job before long... Do you really expect anybody to take you seriously and not think you're quite a piece of work for trying to control people without a rational reason? If you had a reason that wasn't half that stupid your co-workers would still do you in. Life's too short to work all day with pushy control freaks trying to micro-manage their co-workers...

If you really want to be in a position where you can tell people what to do... and you obviously do... 1) Provide something of value. 2) Show that you could handle authority RESPONSIBLY.

Nobody's being mean to you. A little joke at your expense... Sorry, but completely called for.

If you listen to what I'm telling you, you're going to have a much better life and be much more successful. I'm telling you the truth... Something your co-workers will probably not give you the benefit of. They will talk about you behind your back and use your weaknesses and mistakes to climb over you. I'm being a friend.

And about all your "what's wrong with the world" crap... Anyone who seeks to exercise control over others or get noticed in regard to trivial or even NON-EXISTANT matters has some obvious issues. "Nitpicking" is abnormal and abusive behavior. Silly at the very least and silly people are not successful. The fact that you don't see it as such brought out anger in some people here and made others see you as silly, myself included. It will do the exact same thing at your workplace and will harm your future there immensely. Maybe talking to a therapist or someone could help. Again... If you truly believe this kind of behavior will bring you success and can't see why not... You're going to have a disappointing life indeed and I don't want to see that happen to you. I'm telling you the truth and attempting to point you in the direction of a far happier and more successful life. If that's mean... I guess I'm mean...

A CRT monitor is the old tube monitors, like TVs. These can't be damaged by touching them.

LCD screens can be damaged when pressure is applied to them. It may leave vertical or horizontal lines on the screen. It's not a good idea to apply any sort of pressure to an LCD screen.

It's extremely rude. I hate it when people come into my office to discuss something, and leave fingerprints all over the monitor screen. With the glare in my office, it makes it hard to see the screen. I hand them a pencil, and tell them to use it to point with. That works, and doesn't hurt anyone's feelings.

Ok, Just toughing a monitor will not hurt anything, unless you are working on the inside of the computer at the time, so there should be no problem!
