You can try defragmenting or Rearranging your hard drive...
Defragment will delete temporary files or unneccesary program files from your hard drive
Rearranging will move like items together, usually making your comp run faster and files open quicker
If you have Windows XP
Click on Start
Click on Performance and Maintainance
Click on Free Up Space on Hard Drive or Rearrange HardDrive option
BUT MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP ANY IMPORTANT FILES OR PROGRAMS FIRST
Hope that helps...

Download and run Advanced Windows Care V2 it's free it will clean up your system. You will see all the trash you have that you don't need. I don't know a thing about Spybot. I am using Avast it's free and I find it very good way better than AVG. It will warn you of any potential virus / infection you are about to get with the option to abort immediately. I also have Windows Defender that is also free and it gets on with Avast in that they don't have issues. I use Defender as a stand alone scan from time to time just to be sure. One more bit of protection I use is CCleaner also free it's a registry cleaner that even as a stand alone bit of business is a great job, It sorts out the registry it will not alter your Files / Folders or settings The only inconvenience is you will have to sign in all over again re: Google/ Yahoo etc, etc and re enter passwords. I think you will notice a big difference in speed and performance. Another option is to use Firefox as opposed to IE it's faster and you don't get all those error messages. Cheers and Good Luck. PS I would advise you to remove Spybot if you are going to use Avast as Avast will vie for power with it and in a case like that nothing will get sorted out. Besides Spybot is not doing the job if it was you would not have issues. You can use any of the above mentioned as stand alone. You know what I mean try them one at a time untill you are satisfied.

First thing is to download AdAware and run a scan for spyware and adware. Then you might repeat the process using Spybot Search and Destroy.
Next is to look at the system tray (all the little icons down there by the clock). Very often you will have programs running that don't need to be. With the exception of things like your anti-virus software, you can check the properties/preferences for these items and uncheck the option to "launch when windows starts".
Next you can go Start>Run and type msconfig. On the Startup tab there will be a list of programs that start when you boot you computer. Many of these don't need to be running and you can uncheck them to stop them launching at startup. Look for things like itunes helper, qttask, realplayer, and other things that go with programs you aren't using all the time. I usually have no more than 3-4 items checked in this section. If you're not sure what an item is you can type the name of the exe file into a Google search (such as "qttask.exe") and get information about what it is. Try not to do more than 2-3 at a time and then reboot your computer. That way it's easy to know what to turn back on if your computer doesn't work right afterwards.
If you have a lot of icons on your desktop you can try deleting them - especially ones to launch programs. Each of these icons takes up memory. If you have documents or pictures stored on your desktop, consider moving them to My Documents.
The final thing you can do on your own is to look for Windows services that can be downloaded. This link has good information about this, but it is for more advanced computer users. http://www.blackviper.com/index.html
Lastly, look at how much RAM or memory you have in your computer. If you can afford to spend $50-$100 you can probably add more memory and this can really improve performance if you have close to the minimum recommended.
UPDATE
Here are a couple more ideas.
1. clear temporary files from your computer as others have suggested.
2. run a defrag on your harddrive. If you do a lot of downloading an deleting, your drive can become fragmented and that slows your computer down because it has to look in different places for the information (imagine having to go to 10 different places all over town to pick up ingredients for a cake).
3. If you download a lot of files: songs, movies, software, etc, consider writing these off to cds or dvds and then deleting from your computer. If your drive is close to full it will run slowly.

ok (assuming you have XP)click start => control panel => performence and maintence => free up space on your harddrive, or free up space on hard drive to make programs run faster for the free up space, it will defragment you cpu, its really easy, just let it run, and you mite wanna delete cookies and temp files, you can do this from your internet browser, click on file => preferences, and from there find a option that says delete all cookies, and there should also be one for temporary files, yet anther thing you can do is delete everyting in your recycle bin, when you delete somting it goes there, its like a ziped file, it makes it smaller but dosent get rid of it, so just empty recycle bin and that will help too, or if none of that helps much, just reformat your comp, im sure if you dont know how someone can show you, its perdy easy

Look in these folders(Copy and paste)
Simple Startup
Start >> Run >> msconfig
-------------
Advanced Startup:
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Click start, go to run, and type in regedit
navigate your way through and go into these two locations:
/hkey_current_user/software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/run
/hkey_local_machine/software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/run
These are where startup items are located.
...
Performance:
Right click "My Computer", Click the tab 'Advanced', Go to
-------------
Performance:
Click "Adjust for best performance"
Then check (In the list) "Use visual styles on windows and buttons"
Clicking the tab(In the performance options) that says Advanced will allow you to modify your pagefile, I suggest you have it at "System Managed"
I dislike the idea of virtual ram, so I don't use a pagefile.

Good luck with speeding up your computer, and I hope you understand what I'm saying, 500 characters isn't enough.

1) Back up your data
2) Collect all the CD's you need to install your software
3) Find the system restore disk that came with your computer
4) Put in the system resore disk and follow the instructions
5) Re-Install your software from the orignal CDs
6) Move your backed up data back to your hard drive.
It's a lot of work but your computer will run VERY FAST, like the day you bought it.

Go to the site securitytango.com They will list in great detail the steps to go over, what you can download and what you can do.
Be aware, the steps are not difficult, but they ARE precise. You have to follow all the steps in order and generally printing them out first is the recommendation.
