i guess that all depends on your child. my daughter ate solid foods before her friend who is 6 month older than her. you can give her graham crackers, ice cream cones, the cake ones. anything that turns into mush. if your child seem instersted in what your eating give them bites it won't hurt anything. with my kids they were off baby food by 9 or so months. my daughter never at the size 3 baby food she would alway gag but never on "people" food. so feel free to give your baby small bites of soft food and go from that point.

Cheerios are a pretty good finger food to start out with. I think my son was about 8-9 months when he started. As far as choking, babies have an incredibly strong gag reflex so its somewhat hard for them to choke because they gag so easily. And of course, you'll be right there so if its not going well, stop and try again a week or two later. You could also try something like avacado first because its so soft.

my niece choked very badly on a teething biscuit at 10 months so I didn't give these for a while. a large piece can get break off and get stuck in their throat. Yes, they have a gag reflex but you are right to worry, babies die from choking!

very soft and very small dices-at 10-11 months. start with Gerber graduates, they are very soft and small. dont let the baby stuff their mouth. make sure they are eating slow. and sitting up in a high chair. always be prepared and know what to do in case they do choke.

I started my daughter on finger foods when she was able to crawl(about 8 months old.) The best that I found for starter finger foods was these little stars that you can buy at any Wal-Mart or grocery store. They actually dissolve in your childs mouth and my daughter LOVED them! They have several different flavors.
