A D&C (dilitation and curettage) is done for one of two reasons: 1. diagnostic purposes, and 2. to remove the contents of a miscarriage that didn't come out on its own.

A D&C is started by the dr inserting special rods in to the cervix to help make it more open (the dilation of the cervix), then after they do that they insert a special instrument called a curette. This instrument is meant to scrape. They scrape some of the uterine lining if it's done for diagnostic purposes or scraping some of the products of a miscarriage that is not complete.

There will most likely be some cramping afterward because of the fact that this instrument was inside the uterus. There may also be some spotting and bleeding for a spell after this procedure but that is normal.

The cervix will close back up after about 2 weeks or so.

I had a D&C done for diagnostic purposes in 1999 when my dr found that I had a polyp at the top of my cervix.

We had to do it because I was also having some issues with bleeding at the time.

D&C Dilation and Curettage type it in google and you will find a lot of info. Ask your doctor why he recommends it for you and what he expects to achieve by it. I read a book called D&C Dollars and Cents. There are doctors who recommend it with dollars and cents in mind with little advantage to a patient.
Do your own research.
