I have just gotten a new car and I'm wondering, what are things I must remember when maintaining a car..... such as inspections, or rotating tires....This is my first car so I'm not that sure what I need to do to keep my car up and running the best.

the #1 thing is oil changes. how high end of a car determines how much money you want to put in to it. you can make a good car last a long time by maintaining it but a cheap car will break no matter what and will not benefit enough from the extra money / work. assuming you have a decent car then change the oil and filter at or before 3000 miles and flush out and refill the radiator at the same time ( only use premixed radiator coo lent or 50/50 with distilled water (not tap)). rotating your tires is not a big worry. also use the correct grade gas for it. if it says to use 87 (cheap gas) don't use 91 (premium) and the other way around. always listen for unusual noises or leaks and try to locate and identify them as soon as possible. if i can be of help you can contact me at hunter1stshot@yahoo.com and i will do what i can for you. best of luck.

The car should come with a maintenance manual with a maintenance schedule.

You should buy a book on basic car maintenance, even if someone else will be maintaining your car, so that you understand car maintenance. Read your manual also.

Replace the oil and oil filter every 3,500 miles. At 30,000 to 35,000 miles, replace the coolant, brake fluid, air filter, fuel filter, automatic transmission fluid (unless the car uses a newer long-life fluid, then replace at 60,000 even though the manual doesn't say to), power steering fluid (unless it's a lifetime fluid, then replace at 60,000 miles), and spark plugs (50,000 miles if your car uses platinum plugs). Replace hoses, belts, spark plug cables, light bulbs, wiper blades, and brake pads when they're worn. Batteries should last 3.5 to 5 years, depending on usage and temperatures. Tires should last a similar amount. If the car has a timing belt, replace it and the water pump and tensioner at 60,000 - 80,000 miles. This is very expensive, but very important. If the timing belt brakes, your car will be inoperable and the engine will need serious repairs. If your car is RWD, 4WD, or AWD, replace the differential gear oil every 35,000 miles. Find an honest mechanic.

Check your owners manual. It will give the recommended maintenance intervals.
If you do not have it you can purchase a repair manual for the car and it will also have the maintenance requirements.
You can buy them on line or in a store like autozone or advance auto parts.
www.autozone.com has the info also. Look up your vehicle under repair info. If its a brand new car it won't be there.

Congratulations on your new car. The most important thing to do is the oil. Alot of cars actually come with a guide in the owners manual that tells you what you need to change on a specific mileage. For example: oil is every 3,000 miles, fuel filter every 30,000 miles etc........

my friend, you can get all kinds of answers, and i am 60 years old,and i have been using castrol syntec oil for all my life, and i have cars with 300,000 miles on them. the oil will make the engine last and last.and keep the air cleaner check and replaced.that is one of the most deglected things on car maintance... i'm a diesel mechanic, and i know of racing teams that used this product and cut the wear on there engines unbelievably.
