How do you know that you are alive?

Is it because you are breathing? Because you are aware of yourself and what is around you?

I'm just trying to imagine how a Creator would define what is alive.

This isn't a question about abortion or creationism or evolution. And it refers to humans and animals.

So far, there have been a lot of great answers that really show the amazingly different ways that people experience life.

If you can care about another living thing, that's true life.

I experience a range of emotions: joy, sorrow, anger. I know the pain of losing a loved one. I can marvel at the beauty of a flower, a butterfly or a sunset. I can appreciate a good chocolate bar. I love, and am loved.

But the number one way that I know I am alive is the way my nephew's whole face lights up when he sees me.

Why not plants too?

The day I can do without food, water or air I will know I'm no longer alive, if there is any sentience at that point.

we dont know we're alive.
thats the beauty and wonder of it.
of course we have science,
it tells us that we're breathing and living,
but what if thats all a lie?
it could be.
thats what makes life so interesting.

you were chosen to be alive. Live your life to the fullest sometimes i wonder that too. But i know that God chose us to be alive and to live our life to the fullest. =)

I eat and have bowelmovement... I fart and it smells.... I sleep and dream... I have to wash my hair, otherwise it starts smelling.... I'm alive all right!
