Heres the thing, I live in a small town in lower Alabama, I am a hairstylist and I had a lady that came into my shop and she was from Wiscosin (we call them snowbirds) and she looked at me and said "OMG, You are so beautiful and you have all your teeth and are a very smart lady" and she went on and on about my country accent WTF!?!?!? and to make things worse I have heard this a couple times before (not in those exact words of course) So my question is Why do alot (not all) people think that southerners are uneducated, toothless, and ugly and should be in our overalls sittin on a porch drinkin moonshine:)?? I just want to know how many people think that and why do they think that??? Thanks in advance.

Because "hicks" don't only come from the rural South. They come from everywhere, an they are the one who make such stupid comments. That is something some people (hicks) are too stupid to know. I live in a small Florida town and I have a doctoral degree. Dozens of people in my hometown have doctoral degrees. Many more have masters degrees. Most of us are engineers working for the military, but I'm an attorney.
I love the lifestyle. Especially the part where I prove to the judge that the smug attorney from Atlanta or Miami didn't bother to correctly research the law because he thought he was up against a hick who was an idiot. I've always shown my opponent was the hick.

I grew up in a small Vermont village of about 3,000 people. The town that surrounded us was the same school district and about another 3,000 people. Let's say the entire region was about 7,000.
Nearly half the area's residents work in the dairy industry. Lot's of farmers. Lots of farm hands. I worked in a milk packing plant for a few years.
This was the land of flannel shirts, rusty pick-ups, etc. Certainly you'd come to that assumption very easily. Not so apparent was there were about 1,500 orthodox jews running small natural/kosher farms, again mostly dairy products.
The truth of the matter was only about 1/2 the area's population were hicks, it is just that they LOOK so prominent.
Being a country boy myself, I've tried to get an education and a certain level of sophistication.
I've been to the rural south. Ignorance is a virtue. The percentage of hicks is much higher, and just like their Yankee cousins, they are prominent.
Thank them for that...

It's what the media portrays. Also, old tradition, primitive mindsets are also associated with the South ever since American history, since the north modernized themselves the first and the southerners rebelled to keep old traditions. There are great people from the south, but there are also a few who perpetuate the stereotypes the non southerners believe about the southerners and of course like with all stereotypes, perpetuating always reinforces those beliefs amongst the people judging.

They have bought into the media perpetuated stereotypes of southerners.
Also, many of them have more disposable income than people in the south do, so they get a superiority complex and think they are better and know more than we do.
A majority of people like that also have a sense of entitlement and will "run over you" to get what they want.
I wish they wouldn't ever come to my area. There are a few nice retirees/snowbirds, but the a**holes are a definite majority in that group.

I'd say that people are just ignorant and have a pre-conceived picture of us southerners from shows like Hee-Haw, Andy Griffith, Beverly Hillbilles etc. Just goes to show you how stupid some people can really be, huh? I lived in Boston for 1 year when I was a teenager and I got really tickled because people would find out we were from Atlanta, GA and they would just demand that we speak. We, of course, laid it on thick about grits ya'll...just had to do it. But they just ate it up!!! Sometimes people just act surprised that we are literate. Oh well....we just will continue to surprise and please people with our accents and having teeth.

Because Hollywood throws lots of money to film producers who make movies like ' the dukes of hazzard' which gives the ingnorant people a misleading window on southern life.
