Try isolating the issue

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type msconfig
Go to startup
Try unchecking all of them
Press Apply
Press Close
Restart the computer
Click on Don't show this message again
Click on OK

Try to see if the computer is still slow
-- if it not slow anymore
You would know its one of the startup so try to isolate further like try to check it one by one to know which is causing the problem or uncheck those programs that are not necessary during startup.
Usually Antivirus programs are the only softwares that you need during startup..

-- if same problem persist
Use the following tools

The program is called smitfraudfix
http://siri.geekstogo.com/smitfraudfix.p...
-- Just follow the instruction there

then do an Online ewido scan
http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/...
Just remove all those infections

You can also perform DiskCleanup and DeskDefrag to make computer run faster

Click on Start
Click on All Programs
CLick on Accessories
Click on Tools
Disk Cleanup and DiskDefrag is there

:)

It sounds like your computer is infected with spyware. Norton works on KNOWN computer viruses. When was the last time you did a windows security patch or updated your virus protection. To be sure you should run a scan for active spyware. Pray that you do not have a key-logger that records every keystroke you make. Viruses are bad... but spyware today can be designed to steal your identity, and $$$. Banks & financial institutions are not replacing funds that are stolen if the fraud eminated by the use of your login and password.
You can run a free scan on your computer by visiting my website at www.myinvisusdirect.com/bpietr...

Nortons may be the cause of your computer running slow as Norton is a hugh resource hog. No antivirus program compares to the amount of resources that Nortons uses. Plus it has a long history of slick marketing and not performing as claimed.

Open you Task Mgr., Ctrl,Alt,Delete and your Task Mgr., will appear, check your running processes and see which program you have installed are eating up your resources.

You may want to considere removing these programs, or upgrade your memory & motherboard if you don't have an Intel Pentium 4 and atleast 516MB of memory.

You also may want to defrag., your pc on a regular basis.

Clean your hard disk, with an excellent free program that I use, http://www.ccleaner.com

Good Luck.

To keep your PC running efficiently, consider these free tools:

-- CCleaner is a freeware PC optimization tool.
It combines a system cleaner that removes unused and temporary files from your system and also a fully featured registry cleaner!

-- O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware
This freeware Windows defragmentation tool is completely integrated into the Microsoft Management Console as a snap-in and can be used to replace the standard Windows 2000/XP defragmentation software.

If your browser seems slow, also consider switching to Opera 9.2 .
If you use Internet Explorer you are more likely to be subjected to dangerous software such as viruses and spyware. Opera is more secure, and takes up less of your computer's memory. With its unique features Opera lets you browse the Web more efficiently and helps you stay more productive online. Opera also has an integrated e-mail program so you no longer need to use one program for browsing and another for e-mailing, unless you wish to do so.

The first thing you have to do is defragment your disk download this software is free and works great ccleaner you can get it at download.com, the things everytime you get connected to the web some information is stored in your computer as cookies, registry and some other stuff that don't necessarily harm your computer but after a while a huge amount of data is stored in your PC and then is harder for your disk to work due to this overload of information. What this software do is that deletes those useless entries in your disk and make it work faster, this software will not delete any of your important files but its wise to create a backup just in case.

I bet you're running a bunch of programs at once, or at least some high-memory programs. Without running anything, once your system is started up and everything is loaded, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and click on the "Performance" tab. Neither graph should be breaching 50%.

Your Norton was free?/ out dated. Get a restore disk. You could get it free from the brand of your computer, if it is new enough.

Defrag your hard drive. It should be done regularly (monthly or so). As files get written and deleted, they get separated up and stored all over the place on your hard drive. Defragmenting puts the the files back together and improves read access time.
