The cause was Agamemnon's greed for wealth and land. He didn't hesitated for a second before sacrificing his own daughter in order to convince the other greedy Greek warlords that he meant business. The effect was the complete destruction of the great Trojan civilization. As for the story of Helen and Paris that was just the right excuse to start a 10 year lasting bloody war.
