I have Verizon DSL and I have a router. No extra charge.

No. Verizon use to allow multiple computer hook-ups through just a hub, this created so much overload on the network that they decided you had to have a router which decides which computer on you network gets more attention based on what the computer was doing.

A single computer doesn't need to be hooked up to a router or hub, since it is not sharing the same line with other computers.

If they supply it, maybe. If you supply your own they'd have no way of knowing you had it anyway.
