Can I use it as a router? Can somebody give me basic step by step instructions to use this with a basic cable modem?

I am not for sure but I think you can. There is a 1-800 number that is with it. I called them when I had issues setting up my router and they are very nice and will go with you step by step and are very patient. They are also opened 24 hours a day.

No you can't, either exchange it or buy a normal router and connect it to that.
