The UK is currently ruled by the House of Windsor. The family name is Mountbatten-Windsor.
From Buckingham Palace's website at http://www.royal.gov.uk
"The Royal Family name of Windsor was confirmed by The Queen after her accession in 1952. However, in 1960, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh decided that they would like their own direct descendants to be distinguished from the rest of the Royal Family (without changing the name of the Royal House), as Windsor is the surname used by all the male and unmarried female descendants of George V.

It was therefore declared in the Privy Council that The Queen's descendants, other than those with the style of Royal Highness and the title of Prince/Princess, or female descendants who marry, would carry the name of Mountbatten-Windsor.

This reflected Prince Philip's surname. In 1947, when Prince Philip of Greece became naturalised, he assumed the name of Philip Mountbatten as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.

The effect of the declaration was that all The Queen's children, on occasions when they needed a surname, would have the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.

For the most part, members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname (such as upon marriage), that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor.

The surname Mountbatten-Windsor first appeared on an official document on 14 November 1973, in the marriage register at Westminster Abbey for the marriage of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips.

A proclamation on the Royal Family name by the reigning monarch is not statutory; unlike an Act of Parliament, it does not pass into the law of the land. Such a proclamation is not binding on succeeding reigning sovereigns, nor does it set a precedent which must be followed by reigning sovereigns who come after.

Unless The Prince of Wales chooses to alter the present decisions when he becomes king, he will continue to be of the House of Windsor and his grandchildren will use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor."

The names of both Windsor and Mountbatten were changed from the more Germanic-sounding names of Saxe-Coburg-Gothe and Battenberg in 1917 in a bid to appease the anti-German sentiments caused by World War II.King George V changed the name of his family several days after England was bombed by 24 German twin-engined Gotha bombers!
Prince Phillip's Danish-German family anglicized Battenberg into Mountbatten.
Two further explain the names;each Royal Family within the family can be known by their titles:
The Prince of Wales and his sons are known as
Charles,Prince of Wales,William of Wales, and Harry of Wales.Camilla chose to use another of her husband's numerous titles in order to honor Diana,Princess of Wales' memory.
Prince Andrew,Duke of York's clan are the Yorks, daughters are Beatrice of York and Eugenie of York.Ex-wife Sarah is still called Sarah,Duchess of York.
Prince Edward,Earl of Wessex's group include wife Sophie,Countess of Wessex,or Sophie Wessex, and daughter Lady Louise Wessex. Edward will assume his father's title after his father dies.
Anne, the Princess Royals' ex-husband never took a title, she preferred it that way,so her children are known by their father's name of Phillips.

It's Windsor, but the Queen decreed that certain descendants -- those who do not have the style "Royal Highness" -- should use "Mountbatten-Windsor". However, there has been some confusion about this, and even Princess Anne used "Mountbatten-Windsor" when signing her wedding register at her first marriage. "Mountbatten" is the surname Prince Philip, the Queen's husband, adopted before his marriage, taking it from the anglicization of the Germanic "Battenberg" that his maternal grandfather had adopted. If the royal family really were going to return to the old "Saxe-Coburg and Gotha" name, which actually came from Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert, then it would make more sense to use the royal "House" name belonging to Prince Philip's family, which was "Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg- Glucksberg". As you can see, sticking to the simple "Windsor," adopted near the end of World War I and in the context of hostility towards the Germans, makes much more sense. See below:

Officially it's Mountbatten-Windsor, decreed by the Queen after she married Prince Phillip, his family name was Mountbatten but many of the royals use either Windsor or the name associated with their title, for instance both Prince William and Harry use Wales for their last name on documents. Prince Edward, who is the Earl of Wessex, uses both Edward Windsor and Edward Wessex and his wife uses Sophie Wessex. Basically it's one of those very complicated, yet easy situations: They can call themselves what they like because frankly everyone knows who they are regardless.

The Queen is of the House of Windsor. Prince Philip is a Mountbatten. Charles, Andrew and Edward and their children are Mountbatten-Windsor.

The House of Windsor was formerly the House of Saxe Coburg Gotha after Queen Victoria's husband Albert (Victoria was the last of the Hanovers). George V changed the name to Windsor during WWI.

In the Treaty of Gibraltar Hanover changed to Windsor House of Saxe-Gotha-Coburg, But That kind of Windsor on WW1 1900 was the unification of Germany and The King was King Wilhelm and the unification was Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The Treaty of Paris was noted a bad treaty cause UK was to be underdog of Germany. So UK notion was in coordination and Alliance with USA sealed by the Royalty of the Three sons of King Christian X in conspiracy and UK/USA royal order of bottle. And King George VI become the king puppet. After King Edward VIII abdication. And such conspiracy continue till 1957.

So therefore the British Royalty last name still LANCASTER and YORK that such roots of Royalty comes from King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Mountbatten cannot inherit the throne in the basis of strick ascendancy compliance in affinity to blood especially if theres someone else of salic pragmatic affinity. Queen Elizabeth II was concented cause she was of York-Lancaster-Windsor regardless of USA conspiracies. Ref to legal Blah of UK after the announcement of Elizabeth II decision to marry a Mountbatten. Barr to desinherit the throne.

Brittish throne will be going back to King Edward VIII heirs in absolute basis, and such absoluteness cannot be drived out even a hundred folds and thousand addication laws of UK, against a salic pragmatic valid ascendant of King Edward VIII. My opinion base on the present laws of UK.

King Edward VIII abdication was against sealed in royalty by his three nephew Sons of King Christian X back 1936 plus Queen Mother sealed of Royalty. As the old folks saying...No stone can hit you if that stone is not greater in power than yours...Laws speaks louder than its people....

Lancaster was Queen Alexandra and far royal than King Edward VII , Queen Mary von Teck was a double Lancaster of Scotland and Japan and King George V was a Lancaster despite of Being a Yorkist of Ulsburg and Oldenburg. Because Lancaster had always a female ascendant and Windsor always a male. Royalty silver lining was still Lancaster. But Lancaster without Windsor and York is consider commoner. It always takes Two to Tango...

Where are ascendants of the three sons of King Christian X... His Youngest son Don Julio married Rosa Lancaster of Spain and His two Brothers married commoners. Don Julio Childrens married commoners nor prostitute. This the reason why King Edward VIII heirs are going to make cha-cha in British-Denmark-German Throne by legitimate ascendancy and a hopefull prayer to its political motion to just awareness.
