I'm really getting into web design as a hobby. It would be nice to get paid for it. What are the various pathways? What's the salary like in the UK (north)?

Find some local businesses with outdated websites and go in and talk to the manager. See if you could do some freelancing until you can compile a nice portfolio of work that you can show to companies.

If you're looking for a rate to charge, call up a web design firm and find out how much they want for a similar site. Then, you undercut them for a while until you can get a start.

That's what I'd do...

Gonna be a long ride, as web designers are now growing on trees everywhere.
You dont actually need a degree, if you are good, you only have to built a few websites as your resume, a web boss can tell in minutes if you are good or not just by looking at your demo sites.

it's all about your work. start designing some websites and get them on the web, anywhere you send a cv for a job, the first thing they need to see is examples of your work. It's great for improving your skills, to find out what works well and what doesn't.
