My acer aspire 5050 laptop stopped reconizing CD's in it's DVD/RW drive yesterday. DVD's work fine.
So far I've tryed un/re-instaling the DVD/RW driver, I tryed to update the driver but Vista seems to think it's upto date.

Laptop: Acer Aspire 5050 (Aspire 5051AWXMi)
OS: Windows Vista Home Primium

Dual drives have 2 lasers, one of them is dirty or bust. Clean it or new drive

Peter G got it right - DVD drives have two lasers, because CD and DVD formats are different. The CD laser in your DVD drive is, as Peter G suggested, either dirty or knackered.
If using a CD lens cleaner doesn't work, it's probably knackered!

My DVD writer also gave up on CD's - luckily I had a spare CD writer which will do until I replace the DVD writer!

My problem is opposite. My DVD drive can read CDs but can't do with DVDs. My friend said it haven't read a DVD in a long time so it's kind of forget it ability. Maybe you too. I can't fix it. Poor you.
