Actually what is considered modern proof sets started in 1950. There were some made in 1936-1942 ( this group is considered a separate group) but none from 1943-1949. Now there were also proof coins as well as sets sold in the 1800's and some matte proofs made in the early 1900's. Proof sets 1942 and before are a lot of money. They early proof sets have the lowest mintage so they tend to go up in price more as time goes by. Go to a coin dealer and get a Coin World or a Numismatic News, they are weekly coin magazines and check out the ads from the big dealers, they usually have the best prices. A proof set is a special set made up of that years coins. Cent through 1/2 with sometimes dollar coins thrown in if made that year. They are struck more than once and on a special blank and struck from special dies. That is what gives them the proof look of clear fields and frosted busts. They are made for collectors.
