Don't worry too much about the Hybrids that say they get 50 and 60 miles per gallon. The things that they don't tell you about the Hybrids is that the electric engine only runs at speeds under 30 mph. Now you will pay on average $4000 - $6000 more for a Hybrid engine. Do you know how much gas that would buy over a 5 year period? Take a look at some of the new cars out that will get you 30 mpg and don't cost 30K. Like the chevy HHR or the Cobalt. You can also look at the new Sebring or even the Focus. Any of these will cost you from 13K to 18K depending on what trim level you want. Another thing to look at is recalls on specific vehicles over the last two or three years. One thing you will notice is that Toyota has gone in the wrong direction while the American made cars have improved over 200%. Good Luck...

if you can afford a 32k or loaded 34/36k then the best buy for the most tech and gadgets is the Toyota Prius --- there is a thing of thought that you need to address and that is the gas prices are not always going to be at 3.00 a gal. --- if you want a new car and can afford the price go for it ----- if you are buying to save on gas and going for miles per gallon -- take a look at the Chrysler PT Cruiser .... good miles per gal and the sticker is reasonable ------- what seems to be the answer may not be the best buy .... go and kick some tires and talk to several dealership salesmen and please remember that you are in charge and do not get SOLD into some ride that you do NOT want --- make your own decision and do not get pressured into a car deal that's not for you ...........+===

My H-reg* diesel Peugeot 205 gets 45mpg.

I can't imagine you're going to have a problem finding modern cars that will do that sort of mpg.

* H-reg = built 1990
