I keep seeing idiots in Escalades, hummers & other brand new SUVs riding on blinged out $4,000+ wheels..whats the deal, are these people so rich they just dont give a damn about it? I understand some people use them for practical purposes..but 95% are just tryin to show off and be cool. Many a time I see some chick up there in the cabin goin to the mall..its a joke.

I think the statement "because we can" really says it all, which is to say its incredibly selfish and short sighted..the prices WILL keep going up and up..with no foreseeable limit, either the middle east will completely cut us off, and/or China/Russia will severely limit supplies with their economic growth. And thats without the actual oil resources dwindling..lets see where they all are in 10 years time. In the junk heap rusting..

Yup. I'm amazed too. Rarely do you see people in large SUVs or trucks hauling around a bunch of kids or cargo. It's usually one person and an otherwise empty SUV. Even when there are passengers, it's just no more than 4 people. Any compact sedan could hold that.
Still, when you think about it, gas, as a percentage of people's income, really isn't nearly as much as it used to be in the 70s. Our incomes have outpaced the price of energy (long term) enough so that we can afford these short term spikes.

Funny, I don't remember any survey conducted when buying a vehicle that asked me if I was conservative or liberal. Gas prices are high and this is why people are selling SUVs, but there is no evidence whatsoever to assign any political affiliation to the buyer/seller. Further, I just bought an SUV and I am conservative. What does that do to your theory?

I'm not sure why but it might be because some of the vehicles are diesel engines and the gas prices are so high now that diesel is the cheapest fuel you can get so they might be doing it so they don't have to pay as much for gas

It may be idiotic but they do it because they can. That is the great thing about America. We can do whatever we like. I don't agree with what idiots do but I do believe in freedom and in the American way. Socialism is trying to kill these freedoms that we value so much. You want to kill freedom? Why does your family live in a house that has TV's, VCR's, DVD players, Stereos, Computers, etc. when you could easily get by in a tent if need be?

I guess that is what they like so they buy it. I have a Honda Insight that I love but many many people think its the ugliest thing on earth but it what I like so its all in what your taste are in cars
