I have a dell laptop. Just recently, the monitor screen gets really really dark but I can still see some of my desktop and other stuff. It looks like the computer is shut off, but its just the screen that just turns really dark. Every time it does this, I have to reboot and when it starts back up, in about 5-10 minutes, it goes to the same very dark screen. What could be causing this? How can I fix this?

it could be a problem with the tft inverter. if it's still under warranty send it back in. If it's not you should be able to order the replacement part for it. It sits (on most laptops) underneath the tft case below the screen itself. It's pretty simple to replace, two plugs on either end.

First though, check the brightness control on your laptop, and if it's a dell with an ambient light sensor, and your using it in a bright room turn it off (disable dell quickset).

For some reason you are losing your backlight.

LCDs are light gates, so you need a light source behind the LCD panel that the gates can control, hence the backlight.

You could check power management options, but it sounds like it is broken. Call Dell.

I would call Dell Support.
