Help! I am going to be having an ultrasound in less than two weeks for my 20th week. I want to know how they are going to perform it. Internally or externally with the wand on my tummy? The first one they did on me was with my first son, and that was when I was like 5 weeks pregnant. Do they have to do it that way since the baby is extremely tiny? Or, are they going to use the weird looking rod again to check the baby out?

Why did they do an internal the first time? Was it because of how early in the pregnancy I was...?

Hey hun. Since you are now 20 WEEKS, they are ONLY going to rub the doppler across your tummy, they only do it VAGINALLY WHEN YOU ARE early in pregnancy (when the baby is small). Your baby is now big enough to be seen without vaginal ultrasound, UNLESS they see something wrong. Other than that NO WORRIES hun. U will be just fine.

the ultrasound will be done on top of your belly ...typically trandvaginal ultrasound is used only in early first trimester scanning as its a high resolution transducer . At 20 weeks the baby is too large to evaluate transvaginally because the higher the resloution camera , the lower the penetration capabilities of the sound beam.

Good luck , and enjoy your ultrasound!

Hi, I am 20 weeks and have got my ultrasound next week - this is the last one you get if everything is okay so make the most of seeing your little one! It will be external ... unless I am also in for a big shock! lol

No it won't be an internal ultrasound. Your baby is big enough for your tummy now=) They'll check the baby out again. They'll be looking for bith defects and so forth. You should be able to find out the sex as well if your lil one cooperates. I drank a little caffine before I went in and there he was doing flips with his legs wide open. lol. It was too cute. Congrats & Good luck!!!

All of my ultrasounds (at least 17) have been external. With the sonagraph. Unless they have a reason to do an internal one I would imagine they would opt for the external. GL

At 20 weeks, they will most likely do it externally. I only had one internal that late and it was only because we were trying to determine sex and needed a better angle.

Yes early in pregnancy, they do internal so they can see because baby is so small.

usually externally but sometimes they need to do an internal one to get a better look at the cervix

it will be external this time. It will take a while, as the dr has to scan and measure all the body parts and organs. They will likely tell you the sex unless you want to keep it a surprise. Congrats!
