Of course you can, just like you can have too many of any type of fish in a tank. How many depends on the size of the tank, the type of algae eater and a few other factors.

Not really, if the tank gets to clean then you can always just put in algae disks they sell them at any pet stores. You should feed them things ohter then algae anyway, they'll eat brine shrimp (you should feed all your fish this anyway they'll live longer) and try some fruits and veggies. Live plants are great for those guys and you can always give your tank a little more sun light so more algae grows. Look up the exact type of fish you have and see what else they eat. I have a few who come to the top of the tank and lay upside down on the top of the water to eat the frozen blood worms and brine shrimp with the other fish even withvery green tank walls.

Most algae eaters also like it if you put pieaces of drift wood (get it from the store not a lake or pond) it'll grow algae and lots of other little plants much faster then the smooth glass tank. Larger rocks will grow algae faster as well compared to gravel.

If they're having babies you can sell them back to a pet store or to other people who will pay a lot for home tank raised fish like that instead of pond raised fish that might be sick.

Yes, there is only so much algae in the tank, if you put in too many algae eaters then you'll need to also put in algae cakes for them to eat.
