If the Libertarian's were to make a land slide victory in gaining the U.S. federal senate/house majority & also took the presidency next election, would their fanatical zeal towards shrinking government/eliminating taxes where possable be detrimental or advantageous for American's in general? I've heard both sides of the tale before...one beinging as societies evolve individual freedoms need to be curtailed to maintain both "communal" progressivness & order...the other as: societies need more individual freedoms as they evolve in order to give stimulus to both society & individuals in moving the society progressivly to new levels of enlightenment/acheivments. What's your take on this? Do you favor less individual freedoms for you for the sake of progessive order in regards to the society, or more individual freedoms for you as a stimulus towards your contribution to the society in general?

Hmmm, now this is an interesting question. Undoubtedly Libertarians "taking over" would certainly shake things up a bit. Would that be a good thing or a bad thing? Unfortunately the answer is not so simple since the only real answer is both.

In the short term I tend to think economic distress will occur. Fiat money would need to go away so that everyone inthe contry is playing on the same filed..that means the gold and silver standard would return and the barter system would be implemented again. This will do away with the inflation caused by "legal" money and replace it money of intrinsic value. Of course, this will cause a depression overnight. This would be bad.

In the long term, if the government stays out of it, the depression will disapate, the markets will drive themselves and all will be well with the world again. People will act according to their natural instinct and freely interact with others without the fear of repercussions. This would be good.

The issue lies with whetehr or not indiviual people are willing to take back their personal responsibility for their actions instead of lettnig the government do it for you. If each person is willing to be responsible then the economic condition of the country is really not an issue as the peole themselves will find a way to make it work...we did, for 130 years or so, before the government decided to invade our lifes.

Being responsible for your own actions and keeping the government out of our personal lives will increase indiviual freedoms. This can only be good for a society. If you give up freedoms then you become a slave of the society you are creating. So the real question is do you want to be free or do you want to be a slave. Ben franklin probably said it best when he said "Those who giev up a little freedom for a little security, deserve neither"

In general, it would be a good thing as freedom would increase greatly as the government shrank and voluntary self-organization took over for things people really want. However, there would likely be many problems due to insufficient attention to the way the overall system works, as various individual aspects of it are altered.

It might not be such a bad thing, but since most Libertarians are trying to eliminate their own offices it wsould sure shake up Democracy as we know it. It would be even more earth shattering than Jesse Ventura's bid for Governer! There is so much Bipartisan spirit as a result of that, it might be a good thing to get that in Washington as well!

Both. It depends on what level of dependence you have on Big Daddy Government. I think a Libertarian sweep would be excellent! But I also want and do for myself - I don't expect the government to take care of me or my problems. To those people who have become dependent on the government to take care of them, I could see how a Libertarian government would be detrimental.

Libertarian ideas and values provide an environment for people to think for themselves and make their own decisions on moral and social issues. I think that's great. But I think some people would not be able to handle that much individual freedom.
