Hi! Love this question~!

I have always had a very high stress lifestyle, and until recent times, my occupational choices put me in constant contact with people or animals who were in pain or stress to the extreme. I've long since learned just how *vital* it is to have reliable sources of "detoxification"...
For me, the answer is the ranch I currently own... Here are the animals and people I CAN save from a worse fate, and the work of their daily care actually gives my emotional psyche the time and distraction it needs to work out my issues. Working in the garden or mucking stalls are great times to vent, while feeding the fish in the ponds is a time for meditation, or, simply not thinking at all.
My unsolicited draw to Yahoo Answers is that often, strangers have better, more objective viewpoints I can utilize when my own perspective has been obscured by my prejudices.
I think that one's bedroom has a profound effect on one's state of mind, as it is where most people are when they wake, rest, and do other pleasurable pursuits, so a bedroom that pleases all five senses is a must. There are lots of great options, like sinfully soft fabrics, lots of plants, a giant aquarium, a mini-water fountain, a library, a reclining rocker, soothing colors, and comfortable temperatures. Some people like stuffed animals or punch boards where they can pin up their latest goal or eye candy.
In the end, I guess it depends on what makes individuals happy... I live for helping people, so, I help when I can and until I can't, then I do something to treat myself, (at nobody's expense) to balance the scales. A similar "counterpoint" recipe has helped my friends too. I used to feel guilty when I'd buy or do something just for me, but now I know that I've earned the small but precious rewards life allows me... Lord knows that life can be punishing enough, and if your strong enough to make it through, then you deserve all the rewards of your achievements. :>)

To Creole girl - From a Cajun girl.

Call a good friend and vent to him or her. Go home and get unconditional love from a pet if you have one. Think about the good things that you have in your life right now. There is a saying - there are people worse off than you, this is always true. And always say your prayers for peace.

The Serenity Prayer;

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

I make sure I have a little "me time"...a hot bath, a good book, etc.
Calming music, movies I like.
My faith helps me a great deal, knowing I'm not alone.
Good friends that I can talk to. I only have 2 of those, but friends are about quality, not quantity!
It sounds funny but I really am relaxed by watching certain nature documentaries etc. and listening to natural sound recordings (rain, birdsong etc.)

Meditate...Keep a positive attitude. Take 20 min to yourself each day, just to sit and think.

I look at pictures of my dog, and when i get home we go outside and play. No matter how bad of a day i have, he always loves me, he's always happy, and he can always make me smile.
