To accept things as they are even though they may be adverse.

Never heard that one

You can sit on the sidelines for so long then you get up, face the music, and dance. It means to face a situation, usually unpleasant.

To do two things with one action. If you threw a stone at a bird and hit two then you've done two things where you would normally have done one.

Basically hypocrisy. Someone criticising someone else but being just as bad themselves. A pot used on a fire would get a black exterior just as a kettle would. There's no difference.

When red Indians made peace they buried a symbolic hatchet in the ground to show that they couldn't use it against their former enemy. It means to make peace.

It is believed that putting your ear to the ground enables you to hear something approaching before it is in earshot such as a horse or carriage due to the vibrations in the ground rather than those in the air that we know as 'noise' or 'sound' It means listening out for something before other people hear it.

I think you mean playing it close to your chest. When playing cards it is important not to let other players see your hand so when viewing your cards you would hold them close to your chest (or vest I suppose) to prevent this happening. It means to keep something secret or confidential.
